Is It A Crime - 2572 Words
Jeraldyne Herrera Mr. Oakchunas English 3 AP, Period 4 2 June 2016 Is it a Crime to be Black? What do you think about when you hear the word, ââ¬Å"criminal?â⬠Maybe the words, ââ¬Å"murderâ⬠or ââ¬Å"stealingâ⬠comes to mind. The generalization of the crimes is always brought to mind when it appears on news, newspapers, or social media, but how about the identity of the criminal and their relation to the actual crime? A majority of the general public seems to assume that the word ââ¬Å"criminalâ⬠is always relative to the racial minority of African Americans. Why? When showing crime suspects, news channels, informative websites, and social media tend to stereotype the African American race as the counterpart that is always at fault. Crimes involving both the Caucasian/Whites and African American race usually favor the Caucasian/Whites side, and disregard or blame the African American race instead of analyzing the crime that has taken place. The media has influenced the general public to automatically associate the word â⬠Å"criminalâ⬠with African Americans, whereas the Whites would be perceived as a victim even if theyââ¬â¢re the perpetrator. Throughout the years, the news media has been able to shape our minds and make us believe that African Americans are the ones who have made our nation unsafe. Therefore, when investigating crimes and presenting it to the general public, the full background of the crime should always be taken accounted for instead of stereotyping the African American races involved.Show MoreRelatedCrime : Crime And Crime1688 Words à |à 7 Pagesdetermined that a crime is committed every second a day. Mexican Immigrants free essay sample
Do Mexican immigrants bring more harm than good to the U. S economy? After studying about what Mexican American immigrants mean to the United States Economy, I would have to conclude by saying they do not bring more harm than good to our economy. I arrived at this conclusion because I believe Mexican immigrants actually stabilized the economy and help those who canââ¬â¢t afford to pay very high wages to sustain their employees. The theories about how Mexican immigrants take up natural born citizenââ¬â¢s jobs and bring those wages of the market down are ludicrous. These theories also say that immigration effects low-skilled jobs in the United States, but give a weak argument that hasnââ¬â¢t surfaced to reality. The last key thought I am going to explore is what are the overall advantages and disadvantages of Mexican immigration. The notion that the United States is better off without any immigrants is mind boggling to me and I am not taking this stance because I myself migrated to this country from Somalia. We will write a custom essay sample on Mexican Immigrants or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Yes there are lot problems that arise from illegal immigration no matter what ethnic groups are brought up, but that has nothing to do with how this impacts our economy as a whole. Mexican immigrants come to the United States for one reason and one reason only and that is to better their families financially. So how can we turn around and say that they bring more harm to this economy. One argument that anti-immigration advocates keep clinging to is the concept of how Mexican immigrants contribute to a higher unemployment rates in metropolitan areas of Texas and California. The truth is that although the United has seen significant rise of unemployment in conjunction with more Mexican immigrants entering this country; unemployment rates are not affected by immigrants taking up lower wage jobs. There is no base to support this argument that immigration is bad for the economy. One other propaganda of anti-immigration a advocates is the believe of how Mexican American are bad for drug pharmacy businesses by trafficking drugs across the border of Mexico and that there are high number of Mexican immigrants involved with crimes. Again this is totally false because a small number of minority Mexican immigrants are involved is these types of crimes and there percentages are not higher than other minority groups that migrate to this country who commit these crimes. There are way too many ethnic groups involved in selling drugs on the streets (which prevents the government from putting taxation on it) besides Mexican immigrants, so to put the whole blame on one ethnic group is unfair. Mexican Immigrants spend what they earn back on the economy way more then they spend sending back home to Mexico. When they take jobs that someone with advance skills or training might not settle for they are seen as people who bring the economy down? If anything this would further help grow small business across the United States and put more people to work. This is why I can conclude by saying that while there are drawbacks of immigrants who enter this country illegally; I can certainly say there are way more good than bad that can come from Mexican immigrants. There is no denying what they mean to this countryââ¬â¢s economy; I canââ¬â¢t believe there is even an argument over this. Mexican immigrants actually drive the economy when comes their marketability of Cinco de Mayo and other festivities they hold yearly. Lastly, the labor market throws out numbers that spouse to explain how immigrants negatively impact the economy, but what those numbers fail to mention is the details of how they can arrive at this conclusion and different factors affecting their findings.

Sparta Essays - Phalanx, Hoplite, Spartan Army, Sparta,
Sparta In the 7th Century BC a new era of warfare strategy evolved. Before this new strategy, foot soldiers (known as hoplites) engaged in battle in the form of one mob for each army which on the command of their generals runs at each other and proceeds to hack blindly at the enemy with little to no direction other then to kill the enemy in front of them. This proved to be very messy and the tide of battle depended mostly on emotion and size of an army. In the name of strategy and organization, the phalanx was developed. A phalanx is simply defined as a line formation with its width significantly larger then its depth. The depth of the phalanx is a variable which some suggest was decided by the army itself rather then by the leaders of the army. The smallest depth appears to have been that of one man deep. However this was a unique occurrence which is widely believed to be fictitious. The largest depth is that of 120 men deep which was fielded at one time by the Macedonians. On average, the depth of the phalanx appears to be about eight men deep. During the time of Alexander the Great, the phalanx was believed to be eight men deep, but some argue that it evolved into a sixteen man deep phalanx. The Spartans purposely varied the depth of their phalanx so to confuse the enemy about the number of soldiers fielded. The phalanx proved to be a very valuable weapon for the military at that time. Armies which did not adapt to the phalanx formation were quickly slaughtered. The use of the phalanx allowed the Greeks to win the Persian Wars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Many historians believe that the development of the phalanx led directly to social changes occurring throughout Greece during the time of the phalanx's implementation. The phalanx formation allowed men to participate in the military who otherwise could not have because a much smaller investment in weapons and armor was needed to participate in the phalanx. The combined increase in the number of those participating in the army and the increase in importance of the common foot soldier lead to the common man being increasingly treated better by the ruling classes. Eventually this may have led to the invention of democracy. The most noticeable difference between ancient Greek and modern warfare is the amount of "intelligence" information. Today our military maneuvers are almost exclusively reliant on information we get from satellites, scouts, or spies in the opposition. The ancient Greeks totally ignored this area of military strategy. Countless tales of armies meeting each other by chance or armies passing within miles of each other without knowledge of the other. Intelligence information seemed to have come by chance for the ancient Greeks rather then by conscious effort. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Surprise is also an element of war which in modern times is taken very seriously and which was taken very lightly in ancient Greece. In fact there is evidence that ancient Greek soldiers raised their voices in the form of a marching song when they were told that an enemy was near and may be caught unprepared. This war song, called a paian, was also used to promote organization in the marching army so that all soldiers would march with an even step. In addition, the paian was used to promote courage and bravery. A paian was also used on ships to announce the nearness of the enemy. When the actual battle was joined the paian turned into a war cry. The Spartans often accompanied the paian with a flute or several flutes. The Spartan King would lead the paian as well. The use of the paian for attack appears to have Dorian roots. The Spartans are usually the ones associated with the use of a paian. Thucydides mentions that when the Dorians, from other city-states, started a paian when they were serving in an Athenian army, fear was struck into the hearts of the Athenians. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Finally the sizes of the armies were very different from what we are accustomed to today. We are familiar with armies of tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, or even millions. The

The theory determines whether it is just to suffer because of war. Interstate wars began back then in historical periods and they still exist today though the causes and the methods have changed with time[1]. Some examples of military interstate wars include Persian Gulf War and the Libyan War in which the United States participated. This essay highlights the Persian Gulf War and the Libyan Wars which the United S tates participated and it evaluates whether they were conducted for justness. Persian Gulf War The Persian Gulf War was waged by United Nations and it was endorsed by alliance force from 34countries led mainly by the U.S. to fight Iraq for invading and annexing Kuwait. The Iraqi troops had invaded Kuwait at the beginning of 1990 and this action was condemned by international nations. The U.N. Security Council immediately declared economic sanctions on Iraq. U.S. forces were then deployed in Saudi Arabia to prevent them from conducting more harm. The U.S. urged other nations to send their armed forces to Iraq to help in the war. The U.S led intervention made Iraq, in part of the peace terms, accepted to recognize the sovereignty of the Kuwait republic. Kuwait also became less prone to Iraq invasion as Iraq had been ordered to get rid of its weapons of mass destruction. The no fly zone imposed over Iraq for a while ensured peace and stability in the region. The United Nation invasion to fight the Iraq people was of significance; it offered a platform for Kuwait to reconstruct and develop its economy without the fear of invasion from Iraq[2]. This therefore means that the war was conducted for justness.Advertising Looking for essay on international relations? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The Libyan war Following the Arab uprising, especially in Egypt and Tunisia, Libya was soon too caught up in the war wave. In the wave of the uprising, rebels organized attacks against Gadhafiââ¬â¢s government troops. In retaliation, Gadhafi responded by using military force on the opposition. The amount of force used was too excessive in that civilian casualties were witnessed in large numbers. As a result the United Nations Security Council voted to impose a no fly zone over Libyan airspace. The Libyan rebels could not fight the Gadhafiââ¬â¢s troops alone and the United States and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) forces were to help in the ousting of Muammar Gadhafi[3]. The U.S.A provided intelligence and technical assistance to the NATO forces. At the end of the operation, Muammar Gadhafi was ousted and executed, and that marked the end of his reign in Libya. There was a sense of ââ¬Ëfreedomââ¬â¢ among Libyan citizens. It had brought an end to the bloodshed and violence that had rocked the nation. This was another instance where U.S.A had gone to war and the outcome was positive. Bibliography Brough, Michael. Rethinking the Just War Tradition. New York: SUNY Press, 2007. Freedman, Lawrence. Appraches in Business Psychology - Essay Example It is influenced by experience. To observe that a brain structure or a brain process is correlated with gender does not necessarily imply that brain differences cause gender differences. Gender differences in brain structure may result from gender differences in learning, experience, and socialization. All the elements of an organisation ââ¬â the members, functions, rules, governing authority, revenue and ideas ââ¬â must be regrouped around series of basic political issues. Thus, it becomes necessary to identify the issues so that politics in an organisation may be examined in dynamic terms. What issues are these? There are several issues, but the concern of this paper is the issue on the gender. Members are associated within the organisation; they must stand in some kind of relation to each other. In fact, the members are the most important element of the organisation. If the organisation is a pyramid then they were the base; therefore, they are the very foundation of the group. Authorities might be at the top directing and leading the organisation but they should have a thorough understanding of this element to able to run the organisation smoothly. Are all members placed on equal footing? Or are some superior to the rest? The truth is, no matter how bad it seems to be, members would always be categorized according to class in a society where they belong. This fact would tell us that business leaders, in order to interpret their mission and vision, must always conduct class analysis. Rowe (1994) asserted that ââ¬Å"the measures we label as environmental (including such central ones as social class) may hide genetic variationâ⬠(p. 5). And how do genes create the environment? To Rowe, The answer is that the genes may construct a nervous system--and that hormones and neurotransmitters may then motivate behaviors resulting in the dramatic redesign of an environment.

Dickens Great Expectations Essay Example for Free
Dickens Great Expectations Essay Pips account of the events that took place after visiting Miss Havisham My Uncle Pumblechook took me to the home of Miss Havisham. The initial image I had was of a dismal house made from old brick with the windows either bricked up or barred and with a disused brewery at the side of the property. Obviously once a luxurious house it was now beginning to crumble and decay. A very beautiful young girl called Estella met me. Although only my age she seemed to delight in calling me boy. She told me the Manor house also had the name Satis House which in Greek, Latin or Hebrew means Enough house and she claimed that whoever had this house would want for nothing, I found this a curious fact. I went in through the side door as the great entrance had two bars across it. I followed Estella who was holding a single candle along dark passages, where all daylight was excluded. Once Estella and I arrived at a door, she left me in pitch black telling me scornfully she didnt want to go in. I was nervous and apprehensive, however given no other choice I knocked at the door. Once told to enter I found myself in a large dark room in which initially my eyes focused on a draped dressing table festooned with many objects. On further observations I spotted an armchair, sitting in which, I saw the strangest lady I had ever seen before and knew I ever would again. Dressed all in white the bridal dress she wore must have once been worn by a young woman, however now it was seen on an old women whose shrunken body was mere skin and bones. All I could conjure up was the comparison of Miss Havisham to a waxwork skeleton, now in the ashes of a rich dress. The bridal dresses luxurious fabrics of satin, lace and silk were now yellow, faded and paper-thin, and added to this the flowers in her hair and veil gave me the uncomfortable feeling that the women was now dressed in her grave clothes. When Miss Havishams dark eyes turned to look at me I felt utter alarm and wanted to shout, but nothing came out. With my eyes still intently taking in the untidy room, with clothes and personal effects scattered around and with one shoe on her foot and the other on the table, I gave Miss Havisham my name and told her I had come to play. As I was told to come nearer I noted that both her watch and room clock had stopped at twenty minutes to nine, I wondered why this would be? Although afraid of her I felt the necessity to lie when she asked if I was afraid of her, the fact she hadnt seen daylight since before I was born only accentuated my trepidation of her. As she touched her heart it reminded me of the young man and when she told me it was broken I saw her face fill with a weird boastful smile. I had come to play, to entertain Miss Havisham, but I didnt know what to do, she thought that I was being very sullen and obstinate, however I told her that I was sorry for her and was finding everything new, strange and melancholy. I had to call Estella as Miss Havisham told us to play cards together. As I could only play Beggar my Neighbour Estellas contempt of me seemed to grow, I was merely a labouring boy and one that called a knave a Jack. Why did she think so little of me and make me feel conscience for the first time of my coarse hands and common boots? Miss Havisham appeared to watch us in a transfixed expression, like that of a corpse, as though her whole body and soul had dropped and mere daylight would turn her to dust. I had to whisper to Miss Havisham what I thought of Estella and realised that although she was very pretty I also found her very proud and insulting, although deep down I realised I would like to see her again. I did hear Miss Havisham earlier telling Estella she could break my heart if she desired, I wonder what she meant by this? I had a great wish to go home, but on Miss Havishams request I have agreed to return in six days. Being without natural light, I almost thought it must be dark outside so I was hit by the daylight when re-entering the courtyard. On orders from Miss Havisham, Estella brought me some food, however the look she gave me was one that I felt such humiliation and hurt that tears sprang to my eyes. Realising I was morally sensitive and timid seemed to bring pleasure to Estella and she enjoyed treating me as though I was a disgraced dog. Feeling better from the food I was again aware of the whole oppressive wilderness, a crooked pigeon house, with no pigeons, no animals, just a total emptiness. In the brewery building I saw Estella above in the gallery and hanging a figure of the old women in her faded white apparel, when I turned to look again enormous fear hit me, it had vanished! Desperate to go Estella unlocked the door for me, she appeared so superior to me and seeing me cry seemed to fuel her need to taunt me even more. I just felt my self-esteem was at an all time low, I obviously have despicable habits and Im more ignorant than I had ever realised.
